It was the summer of 1974 and people were walking down the street singing and humming Don’t Be a Hero and The Night Chicago Died. Paper Lace’s song was The Night Chicago Died and Billy Don’t Be a Hero was by Do Donaldson and the Heywoods.

Many, myself included, didn’t even realize that Billy Don’t Be a Hero was originally a Paper Lace song and that version was popular in Europe. In England their version reached Number 1 where in the US it barely broke the Top 100. Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods hit Number 1 in the US, but didn’t chart in the UK.

For an added bonus here is the Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods version.

August 1, 2008. 1974, Group, Top 40.
